The College of Plant Sciences began as the Department of Agricultural and Associated Production at the former PLA Quartermaster University. In 2004, the administration of the PLA Quartermaster University was transferred to the Ministry of Education and incorporated into Jilin University and the College of Plant Sciences was set up by integrating its principal disciplines.

The College offers five undergraduate major courses: Agronomy, Plant Protection, Horticulture, Agricultural Resources and Environmental Science, and Biotechnology (plant). Plant Protection has been recognized as the country’s “Second-tier Special Discipline Foundation Site” and is part of a reform pilot project for talent cultivation and training (composite application) under the Ministry of Education. The College of Plant Science is authorized to provide second-level discipline master’s and doctoral degrees in Botany and is authorized toprovide first-level disciplinemaster’s degree programs in Crop Science and Plant Protection. Our Crop Science program has been recognizedby Jilin Province as a “Key Foundation Discipline.”

The College has 60 full-time educators, including 11 professors, 25 associate professors, and 24 lecturers. Meanwhile, the College has twoTang Aoqing Chair Professors (one of which is from the American Academy of Sciences), 15 adjunct professors which include three Outstanding Innovative Talents reward recipients and two Outstanding Contributors in Jilin Province reward recipients.

Research

Crop Science is one of the key foundation disciplines of Jilin Province. Plant Protection has been established as the country’s “Second-tier Special Discipline Foundation Site”. The College has presided over and participated in more than 100 research projects, such as Program 973, 863 Program, NSFC, major and key projects by the Ministry of Agriculture on the cultivation of new varieties of genetically modified organisms etc. The research funding is reaching above 34, 000, 000 RMB. In recent years, the College has received 19 National, Provincial and Ministerial-Level Science and Technology Awards, our research teams have bred 16 new crop varieties and have published more than 100 SCI-indexed papers in top journals, such PNAS, Plant cell, and others.
