Introduction

                                               The College of Environment and Resources (CER) was set up in 2001. The newly established college is comprised of the discipline of hydrogeology from the former Changchun University of Science and Technology and the discipline of environmental chemistry from the former Jilin University. The CER is one of the colleges at Jilin University sponsored by nationally sponsored Projects 211 and 985. Our college conducts research in the fields of geological resources and geological engineering, hydraulic engineering, and environmental science and engineering, which are characteristic and preponderant disciplines in Jilin province.

                                               The CER is composed of three departments: the Department of Groundwater Science and Engineering, the Department of Environmental Science, and the Department of Environmental Engineering. Our college is affiliated with two institutes: the Jilin University Institute of Water Resources and Environment and the Underground Energy and Waste Disposal Research Institute. The CER is home to one Jilin province key laboratory (in water resources and environment) and one international cooperation base (in the development of new energy and geological waste disposal). The College also has a key laboratory of groundwater resources and environment (funded by the Ministry of Education) in collaboration with the Ministry of Land and Resources. Now CER also runs the Environmental Impact Assessment Center of Jilin University, six research centers, and more than 40 specialized laboratories specializing in aspects of environment chemistry, environment engineering, microbiology and water-rock interaction, and other sub-fields.

                                               There are 109 faculty and staff members at the College. Among them, 75 are instructors,32 of whom are full professors, 24 of whom are associate professors. Our faculty includes one academic of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 Scholar, and 4 Tang Aoqing Distinguished Professors. Currently, 951 undergraduates, 341 master’s students, and 76 doctoral candidates are studying at the College.

Majors and Specialties

-We offer 4 undergraduate programs: hydrology and water resources engineering, groundwater science and engineering, environmental science, and environmental engineering.

-We offer 6 master's degree programs: hydrology and water resources engineering, groundwater science and engineering, water conservancy and water power engineering，environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental management and environmental economy.

-We offer 5 doctoral degree programs: hydrology and water resources engineering, groundwater science and engineering, environmental science, environmental engineering, and environmental management and environmental economy.

-We offer 2 postdoctoral programs: environmental science and engineering, and water conservancy engineering.

Research

                                               In the past five years, CER has undertaken 184 national and provincial research projects with success, including one nationally sponsored Program 973 project, one national 863 Program project, one patented project funded by the National Key Technology R&D Program, 61 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, one major project, four sub-projects under the National Water Pollution Control and Management program, six geological survey projects, one public welfare project under the Ministry of Agriculture, five public welfare projects under the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and 18 projects supported by the Doctoral Fund of the Ministry of Education. The efforts put into these projects have made significant contributions to groundwater exploitation and exploration, groundwater resource assessment and management, groundwater and soil contamination and remediation, CO2 geological storage, new energy (geothermal and gas hydrate) exploration, and the development of environmental chemistry, and environmental and ecological system studies.
