The College of Earth Sciences of Jilin University was formerly the Department of Geological Mineral Resources Exploration of Northeast Geological College which was established in 1952. It was renamed as the Department of Geological Mineral Resources Exploration of the Changchun College of Geology in 1957, and then the College of Earth Sciences of the Changchun University of Science and Technology in May of 1997 and finally as the College of Earth Sciences at Jilin University in June of 2000. The College has 175 faculty and staff members. It is home to 113 teachers including 54 full professors, 29 associate professors, and three adjunct professors.
Our college is home to several research groups with strong scientific research abilities and a wealth of long-term research experience. In the past several decades we have carried out over 1,000 research projects, including National Key projects, National Natural Science Foundation projects, nationally-sponsored 863 Program and Program 973 projects, and China Geological Survey projectswith tremendous success. The College has received more than 30 Scientific Research Awards at the national, ministerial, and provincial levels. We have authored over 600 publications in high-level international journals (SCI and EI) and more than 30 research books. Research from the College of Earth Sciences has been ranked among the top 1% in the world according to a report from the dataset of “Essential Science Indicators”released on March 3, 2011.
Our college has three scientific research key laboratories: the National Key Laboratory of Mineral Resources Evaluation in Northeast Asia sponsored by the Ministry of Land and Resources of China, the Jilin Province Key Laboratory for Oil Shale and Paragenetic Energy Minerals, and the National Key Laboratory for the Evolution of Past Life and the Environment in Northeast Asia sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China (shared with the Jilin University Research Center for Paleontology and Stratigraphy).
International Exchange and Cooperation
Throughout its existence our College has been establishing and developing sound relationships dealing with education and scientific research cooperation with more than 60 universities and academic organizations from 16 countries. These include institutions based in the USA, Russia, Germany, Austria, Japan, Australia, Canada, and South Korea. Our college hosts more than 60 foreign students from Europe, Asia and Africa studying with us.
