Introduction

The College of Electronic Science and Engineering of Jilin University was established in 1959 as the Department of Semiconductors. The founder was Prof. Gao Dingsan, a well-known semiconductor specialist in China and an academic at the Chinese Academy of Engineering. As the only department entitled the ‘Department of Semiconductors’ in China, its main research and educational focus has traditionally been on semiconductor science and technologies rooted in a solid physics and chemistry background. This unique feature is now reflected by the College’s main facility, the State Key Laboratory on Integrated Optoelectronics (in collaboration with the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences). This facility has been consecutively evaluated as an excellent state key laboratory in the last three 5-year national evaluations.

The College is currently composed of 6 departments (Optoelectronic Science and Engineering, Microelectronic Science and Engineering, Sensory Science and Engineering, Electronic Information Science and Technology, Electronic Information Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering) and boasts two experimental centers for undergraduate students. It enrolls around 500 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students (approximately 43 Ph.D. candidates) annually, providing bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees of both science and engineering. There are 164 faculty members and staff working at the College, including 49 full professors, 32 associate professors, 40 assistant professors, and more than 29 engineers. They work as editors and advisory board members at more than 10 nationally and internationally well-known journals such as Optics Letters, Nanoscale, Light Science and Applications, and Science Bulletin.

The College ranks among the top-ten in various research and comprehensive evaluation systems on electronic science and technologies. Its rapid development in recent years is particularly eye-catching.

Known for producing China’s first semiconductor devices, Germanium power transistors, the College has been focusing under the leadership of Prof. Gao Dingsan on fundamental research on optoelectronic devices, materials, device physics, and the processing and integration of technologies based in the State Key Laboratory on Integrated Optoelectronics. Our research on organic optoelectronic devices, femtosecond laser processing technology, nano-dot fluorescence, and chemical sensing is particularly well developed. We publish over 300 SCI-indexed papers per year, with half of them in journals with an impact factor of over 3, and the College has won a national (2nd rank) and a provincial (1st rank) scientific achievement award 5 times in recent years.
