Introduction

    The former Department of Mathematics of Jilin University was set up as a result of the nationwide readjustment and reorganization of universities and colleges in 1952. In 2001, the School of Mathematics of Jilin University was established from the former mathematics departments of the former Jilin University, the former Jilin University of Technology, the former Changchun University of Science and Technology, the former Norman Bethune University of Medical Science, and the former Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications.

    The School of Mathematics was one of the first Natural Science Basic Research and Teaching Personnel Training Bases, and in 2002, the School of Mathematics was recognized as an Excellent Training Base. In 2007, our Mathematics program was recognized as a National First-Class Key Discipline. The School of Mathematics now receives the support of the nationally funded Project 985 and the Project 211National Key Disciplines program. In 1993, the School of Mathematics jointly established the Key Laboratory of Symbolic Computation and Knowledge Engineering of the Ministry of Education with College of Computer Science and Technology.

    There are six departments, four undergraduate programs, and we offer Masters and Ph.D. programs in Mathematics and Statistics. The School of Mathematics has more than 1600 students and 200 faculty members, including one double-position academic, one “National Renowned Teacher” award recipient, one “Yangtze RiverScholars Chaired Professor,” four recognized scholarsin the “ Plan”, one “Distinguished Young Scholar of the National Science Foundation award recipient, two “National Outstanding Youth Scholars of the National Science Foundation,” and three of our professors are “Changbai Mountain Scholar” award recipients.

Research

    The School of Mathematics has been recognized as a “Natural Science Basic Research and Teaching Personnel Training Base” of China and has received many awards, including the State Award for Natural Sciences, the State Award for National Sciences and Technological Progress, and other awards at the municipal and ministerial level. The School has taken or is taking part in many national research programs including 863 Program projects and Program 973 projects. It has produced a large amount of high-level scientific research output.

International Collaboration and Exchange

    Internationalization is an important goal of the School of Mathematics. It has built collaborative relationships for academic exchanges with more than 20 universities in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, and elsewhere. The school has established a worldwide communications network. Every year, over ten teachers go abroad to conduct research.
