Introduction

  Jilin University (JLU) has been engaged in Northeast Asian studies for many years. In 1964, under the approval of the State Council, Jilin University established the Japanese Studies Research Center and the North Korean Studies Research Center. Since 1970, Jilin University has successively set up the Institute for Japanese Studies, the Institute for North Korean Studies (later renamed as the Institute for Korean Peninsular Studies), the Institute for Soviet Union Studies (later renamed as the Institute for Russian Studies), the Institute for Population Studies, the Institute for Regional Economics, and the Institute for Tumen River Area Development. The School has been engaged in research on Northeast Asian countries, including Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Russia, and Mongolia.

  In April 1994, the Institute for Japanese Studies, the Institute for Korean Peninsular Studies, the Institute for Russian Studies, the Institute for Population Studies, the Institute for Regional Economics, and the Institute for Tumen River Area Development merged into the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University.

  Over the decades, the Northeast Asian Studies College has developed into a well-known research institution with significant impact both in China and overseas, focusing on the research of international issues and interdisciplinary studies.

  There are 84 faculty and staff members in the Northeast Asian Studies College, of which 61 are faculty members. Among them, there are 28 full professors (including 24 Ph.D. supervisors), 24 associate professors, and nine lecturers. The Northeast Asian Studies College boasts strong faculty, among whom one is an Eminent Professor in Philosophy and Social Sciences, one is a member of the Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council, one is a member of the Social Sciences Commission of the Ministry of Education, onehas been conferred the title of “Cross-Century Outstanding Talent” by the Ministry of Education, four have been conferred the title of “Special Management Experts of Jilin Province,” threehave been conferred the title of “Top Innovative Talents of Jilin Province,” twohave been conferred the title of  “Young Middle-aged Professionals with Remarkable Contributions of Jilin Province,” twohave conferred the title of “KuangYaming Distinguished Professor of Jilin University,” three have been conferred the title of “KuangYaming Chair Professor of Jilin University.” Our dedicated research teams enjoy a high reputation in both research capacity and teaching quality.

Majors and Specializations

   Since its foundation, 621 Ph.D. students, 1,148 master students, and 220 international students have graduated from Northeast Asian Studies College. Currently,the College has 282 Ph.D. students, 226 master students, and 31 international students.

   Since 2004, entrusted by Minister of Education, Northeast Asian Studies College began to enroll students from South Korean pursuing their master’s or doctoral degree in world economics. They were taught in both Korean and Chinese, and their dissertationswere written and defended in the Korean language.

Research

  The Northeast Asian Studies College is a comprehensive research institute, which emphasizes research in various disciplines, including Northeast Asia’s politics, economy, population, history, culture, and other aspects. A solid foundation and superior research capacity for the studies of Northeast Asia have been built up over the years of hard work. An academic system highlighting the studies on how Northeast Asia’s regional economy, politics, history, and population have been constructed. The main research areas include the Japanese economy, the Russian economy, the North Korean economy, the South Korean economy, regional economic theory, regional economic development strategy, Northeast Asia’s politics, sociology of population, population economics, population resources and environment, environment and environmental economics, economic society and sustainable development, Japanese literature, history of Sino-Japan relations, Russian history, and other topics.

  Since the beginning of the new century, Northeast Asian Studies College has won 2 grants from the “Key Project of National Social Science Foundation”, 14 grants from the “Project of National Social Science Foundation”, 1 grant from the “Project of National Natural Science Foundation”, 1 grant from the “ Key Project of Ministry of Education”, 38 grants from “Project of Ministry of Education”, 33 grants from the “Project of Social Science Foundation of Jilin Province”, and 110 project grants from other ministries and for joint projects with enterprises. Northeast Asian Studies College is the winner of 41 awards of the provincial and ministerial level. Thus far 128 books have been published, and 1,590 papers have been published in the periodicals of both home and abroad. 205 reports have been adopted by the government. The Northeast Asian Studies College has fulfilled its responsibilities by providing policy-making consultations for the government and contributing to local economic development.

  In Dec. 1999, the Center for Northeast Asian Studies of Jilin University was selected to be a “Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences in Universities” with the approval of Ministry of Education. It was one of the 15 institutes in the first batch. In 2003 and 2009, the Center for Northeast Asian Studies of Jilin University was inspected by Ministry of Education and was awarded “Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences in University in Excellence” in November of 2009.

International Collaboration and Exchange

  International exchanges and cooperation at Northeast Asian Studies College has been strengthened over recent years. Recently a series of agreements have been signed with the universities and research institutes in U.S., Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Russia, Mongolia, and other countries for student and faculty exchange, joint research, academic information sharing, and co-organizing conference, and more so as to improve research on Northeast Asia.

Since the College was founded, more than 60 international conferences have been held, over 80 faculty members have been sent to Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Russia, U.K., Canada and U.S. for study and research. Over 200 international students from North Korea, South Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Russia, Bangladesh, and Laos have graduated from Northeast Asian Studies College at Jilin University.

  Founded in 1992, “Northeast Asia Forum” is jointly sponsored by Northeast Asian Studies College, Jilin University and the Center for Northeast Asian Studies at Jilin University, one of the key research institutes under the Ministry of Education. It is supported by the National Social Science Foundation and has been selected as a “Double-benefit periodicals” by the China Periodical Square Matrix. It is also one of CSSCI (China Social Sciences Citation Index) periodicals, RCCSE (Research Center for Chinese Science Evaluation) periodicals and National Core Periodicals.

Information Resource Center Library

  Founded in 1994, the Information Resource Center and Library in Northeast Asian Studies College has 5 storage rooms for books in Chinese, English, Korean, Russian and Japanese. It contains 1 reading room has a collection of over 45,000 books.

  The collection covers the disciplines of politics, economy, history, culture, and population in Northeast Asia. It also includes statistical reports on various subjects. Such rich resources are great a support for the teaching and research of the faculty members.  In addition, the Information Resource Center of Northeast Asian Studies College has enriched its resources by building ties with more than 30 relevant libraries and centers at home and abroad for academic resources exchange.
