Founded in June 1993, the College of Foreign Languages at Jilin University traces its origins to 1950, when the predecessor of Jilin University, Northeast Renmin University set up a special training course in Russian. In 1960, the Department of Foreign Languages was established. In 1979, the majors of English, Japanese, and Russian were among the first to receive authorization from the Ministry of Education to conduct master’s degree programs. Currently, of the 73 faculty members, 22 are professors (two doctoral supervisors), 21 are associate professors, and 30 are lecturers. All of the teachers hold master’s or higher academic degrees and have overseas educational backgrounds or work experiences. 34 have Ph.D. degrees and 22 are Ph.D. candidates. The College of Foreign Languages has attracted a variety of scholars and experts with considerable influence at home and abroad, including one chairman of the Sixth Council of the China Association of Japanese Education, one honorary C\chairman of the China Association of Japanese Education, one vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the China Association of Japanese Education, two members of the Foreign Language Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, one chairman of the Jilin Association for Foreign Language Teaching, one vice chairman of the China Association of Sino-Japanese Comparative Literature, one overseas commentator of the Japan Association of Japanese Language Education, one winner of the Baogang Outstanding Teacher Prize, and one Outstanding Teacher of Jilin Province Reward recipient. In addition, several teachers have won the Award for Excellent Achievements in Education at the provincial level. Every year, the College invites dozens of foreign experts to give lectures. The teaching faculty now heads the list of universities in China. The College now has a student body of around 1,000 undergraduates and 400 postgraduates.

Research                                            

Since its establishment, the staff of the College has published 43 monographs, 15 dictionaries, 76 textbooks, 44 translation works, and 787 articles. Moreover, programs at various levels have received grants, among which 6 are National Social Science Fund projects, 11 are Humanities and Social Sciences Planning Fund of the Ministry of Education projects, and 25 are provincial or ministry level projects.

International Collaboration and Exchanges

The College of Foreign Languages attaches great importance to international academic exchanges and cooperation with both domestic and overseas institutes, and has signed cooperation agreements and memorandums with several foreign universities, such as the Cleveland State University, the University of Salamanca, Inha University, University of Complutense, Madrid, and Far Eastern State Humanities University, Russia.

Each year, the College of Foreign Languages sends teaching staff to the US, Japan, Russia, Korea, Spain, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. to attend international academic conferences, training programs, collaborative research, and doctoral programs. Meanwhile, hundreds of students may have the opportunity to study abroad. Annually, about 20 prestigious scholars and experts are invited to give lectures or make short visits.

In 2014, the College was given a grant for theInternationalization Model Base project, which marks a new era on the road to internationalization.


Courses offered by our English Department are taught in the English language at all levels; other departments use foreign languages to teach in class from the second semester.
