The Division of International Relations, the School of International and Public Affairs and College of International Education jointly organized and held “Setting Sail for Dreams: Students’ Sharing of Overseas Experiences”, the second International Cultural Salon, in the International Lecture Hall, Central Campus of Jilin University on October 16th. The aim was to help more Jilin University students learn about overseas exchanges and study before graduation, answer their answers in this regard and make the campus more internationalized.
This sharing was divided into three parts, namely, introduction to programs, students’ experience sharing and Q&A regarding overseas exchange program. In the first part, teachers in charge of various programs from the Division of International Relations introduced degree programs, overseas exchange programs and exchange program in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Their introduction enabled students to have a clearer understanding of the main content, application requirements and processes of each exchange program.
For the experience sharing part, seven students that had taken exchange programs in universities of Europe, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan shared their experiences based on what they saw, what they heard about and how they felt, and they talked about the influence of the exchanges on their life and development. They also talked about multiple aspects such as the overseas study and living environment, curriculum design, language and exchanges and scholarship applications. They also mentioned the different living and study habits and the distinctive cultures overseas, and shared their experiences in diet, living cost and travel. They advised students planning to study overseas to make preparation for foreign language proficiency and other matters in advance.
After students’ sharing, a team of teachers responsible for exchange programs from the Division of International Relations answered questions on overseas exchanges programs. This exchange and sharing gave students access to more information on exchanges and broadened their international horizon. Hopefully overseas exchanges can play a positive role in students’ development and help them set sail for their dreams.
The International Cultural Salon was initiated this semester and will regularly hold themed activities with the participation of Chinese and international students of Jilin University, such as the International Cultural Festival, themed forums on international culture, week of national culture, symposium on hotspot international issues, foreign language corners, creative campus and experience sharing on students’ experience overseas. It will strengthen the exchanges between Chinese and international students, expand the global horizon of the vast number of students on campus and enhance the international competitiveness of Jilin University’s students.
