I. Program Duration
(I) Postgraduate Students
Program duration for postgraduate students: two to three years for master degree students, three to four years for doctoral students. Specific requirements shall be implemented according to the training scheme.
Maximum duration of schooling for postgraduate students: three years for two-year full-time master degree students; four years for three-year full-time master degree students; five years for part-time master degree students; six years for full-time and part-time doctoral students.

(II) Undergraduate students
Maximum duration of schooling for undergraduate students (including those under school suspension and those on school leave but still recorded on school roll) is two years longer than the prescribed duration of study.

II. Degree Awarding
Jilin University awards bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degrees by the disciplines or professional degree categories approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.
Chapter Two Degree Awarding Standards
Article 5 Bachelor’s Degree Awarding Standards
Students to be awarded bachelor’s degrees should complete all the assignments stipulated in the undergraduate training scheme, obtain the required credits, pass the thesis defense and get eligibility to graduate. They should have a relatively good grasp of basic theories, specialized knowledge and basic skills in the discipline concerned; and have the initial ability to undertake scientific research or engage in a special technical work.
Article 6 Master’s Degree Awarding Standards
Students to be awarded master’s degrees should complete all the assignments stipulated in the postgraduate training scheme, obtain the required credits, complete the thesis application independently under the guidance of the supervisor and pass the thesis defense. They should grasp the basic theories and systematic specialized knowledge of their disciplines and have the ability to undertake scientific research or independently engage in a special technical work.
Article 7 Doctor’s Degree Awarding Standards
Students to be awarded doctor’s degrees should complete all the assignments stipulated in the postgraduate training scheme, obtain the required credits, complete the dissertation application independently under the guidance of the supervisor and pass the dissertation defense. They should have a firm and comprehensive grasp of basic theories and profound and systematic specialized knowledge in the discipline concerned, have the ability to undertake scientific research independently, and make creative achievements in science or in a special technology.
Chapter Three Degree Awarding Procedures
Article 8 Bachelor’s Degree Awarding Procedure
(I) Undergraduate training units shall examine the qualifications of the applicants and propose a list of persons to be awarded the bachelor’s degree.
(II) The academic degree evaluation sub-committee of different disciplines shall deliberate on the degree awarding to the applicants who have passed the graduation qualification review, decide whether or not to confer the bachelor’s degrees, and submit the resolutions to the academic degree evaluation committee for review and record.
(III) The bachelor’s degree certificates shall be issued upon the approval of the academic degree evaluation sub-committee of different disciplines and after reviewed and filed by the academic degree evaluation committee.
(IV) The Teaching Affairs Department is authorized by the academic degree evaluation committee to be fully responsible for the management of bachelor’s degree awarding.
Article 9 Master’s and Doctor’s Degree Awarding Procedures
(I) Students can apply for academic degrees after completing all the assignments stipulated in the training scheme, obtaining the required credits and completing the dissertation independently.
(II) The supervisors shall give opinions on whether to recommend the degree applicants to defend their theses or dissertations based on their political and moral performance, course learning, scientific research and dissertation.
(III) The postgraduate training units shall give opinions on whether to recommend the degree applicants to defend their theses or dissertations based on their political and moral performance and learning.
(IV)The academic degree evaluation committee of different disciplines shall review the qualification of the applicants and decide whether to accept the application. Applicants shall be accepted if the following criteria are met:
1. Strong political awareness
2. Completing all the assignments stipulated in the undergraduate training scheme and obtaining the required credits
3. Completing the thesis or dissertation and meet the relevant requirements of the discipline
4. The supervisors and postgraduate training units agree to recommend the degree applicant to defend the thesis or dissertation.
(V) Theses or dissertation Evaluation and Defense
(VI) The academic degree evaluation sub-committee of different disciplines shall deliberate on the degrees awarding to the applicants who have passed the thesis or dissertation defense and decide whether or not to confer the applicants master’s or doctor’s degrees.
(VII) The academic degree evaluation sub-committee of different faculties shall deliberate on the degree awarding, decide whether or not to confer the applicants master’s degrees, and submit the resolutions to the academic degree evaluation committee for review and record. Resolutions on whether or not to confer the applicants doctor’s degrees shall be submitted to the academic degree evaluation committee for deliberation.
(VIII) The academic degree evaluation committee shall deliberate on the degree awarding to doctoral degree applicants and decide whether or not to confer the applicants doctor’s degrees.
(IX) The master’s degree certificates shall be issued upon the approval of the academic degree evaluation sub-committee of different faculties and after reviewed and filed by the academic degree evaluation committee. The doctor’s degree certificates shall be issued after the academic degree evaluation committee has decided to confer the doctoral degrees and the decisions have been announced in the university without objection.

III. Thesis or dissertation defense
According to the requirements of the university, three thesis or dissertation defenses and degree awarding activities are organized for postgraduate students every year. Degrees are expected to be awarded in late June, mid-to-late September, and late December. The deadlines for submitting defense application are expected to be late March, early June, and mid-September.
Undergraduate degrees are awarded in late June and late December (during the Covid-19 pandemic). Specific time for defense (or graduation examination), delayed defense, and other matters regarding graduation application shall be subject to the notice of the university and the training units.
It should be noted that if the postgraduate students delay their thesis or dissertation defense, they may need to pay the extra fee for delay before the defense qualification examination.
IV. Others
1. Language capability
For majors and disciplines in which Chinese is spoken for professional instruction,the international students should be able to use Chinese to complete the study and research tasks and to engage in work in the discipline concerned. Upon graduation, students’ Chinese language proficiency should reach the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages (Level V) .
For majors and disciplines in which a language other than Chinese is spoken for professional instruction,the international students should be able to use that language to complete the study and research tasks and engage in work in the discipline concerned. Upon graduation, undergraduate students’ Chinese language proficiency should reach the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages (Level Ⅳ), and masters and doctors should reach Level Ⅲ.
2. Courses on Chinese language and introduction of China
The professional training scheme for international students shall include the requirements of Chinese language proficiency level and the courses on introduction of China.
