Introduction

     The School of Life Sciences of Jilin University was derived from the former Department of Biology at the former Jilin University, which was established in 1960. Then, in 1997 the School of Life sciences was establshed at Jilin University. The School consists of a Department of Molecular Biology and a Department of Pharmacology. The School offers first-level doctoral degrees in Biology, and second-level doctoral degrees Biochemistry and Molecular Biology which are both national key disciplines. The School houses the National Laboratory for HIV Vaccine Engineering, the National & Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for the Breeding and Cultivation of Chinese Medicinal Herbs, and the Key Laboratory of Molecular Enzyme Engineering under the Ministry of Education. Our Pharmaceutical Engineering major was declared to be a “national life science and technology training base,” and the teaching lab of the School of Life Sciences was awarded the status of “national biological lab teaching demonstration center,” making it the first of its kind in China.

Research

     The School highly emphasizes the importance of scientific research, positively develops international academic cooperation, and heavily participates in a series of Program 973 and 863 Program important research projects of significant national interests. The School has significant strengths and advantages when it comes to researching molecular enzymology, protein prediction, AIDS vaccines, drug metabolism, cellular signaling, archaeological DNA analysis, and many other fields. In recent years, the School has received six awards for science and technology at the provincial and ministerial level, published 13 academic monographs, more than 500 research publications in renowned scientific journals, and has been awarded 12 national patents for invention. The College’s research on HIV vaccination has also been sanctioned for Phase II clinical trials by the state food and drug administration (SFDA).
