Introduction
The College of Physics of Jilin University originated from the former Department of Physics at the former Northeast People’s University. In June 2001, the physics department and other affiliated research institutes from the former Jilin University, the former Jilin University of Technology, the former Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences, the former Changchun University of Science and Technology, and the former Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications were consolidated to form the current Jilin University College of Physics.
The College houses a center for postdoctoral studies in physics. The discipline of condensed matter physics is a national key discipline, which, together with optoelectronics and optics, has also been accredited as a national key subject under the Project 211. The College is a national base for research and teaching talent training in fundamental natural sciences. It is an accredited conferrer of Ph.D. degrees in grade one subjects.
The College has 215 faculty members, among which two are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. There are 11 honorary professors including some world-renowned physicists such as Chen Ning Yang and Leroy L.Chang. The College now has four undergraduate programs: physics, applied physics, nuclear physics, and optoelectronic information science and engineering. 1035 undergraduate students, 298 graduate students, and 98 doctoral students are studying at the College. The undergraduate education at the College has constantly adjusted its curricula and instruction methods in keeping with the development of the discipline worldwide. The College attaches great importance to the integration of theories and experiments in the process of teaching and has produced remarkable results.
The College has maintained long-term cooperative relationships with institutions and schools in the U.S., Russia, Sweden, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the ROK, the DPRK, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and many other countries. The College has been participating in “2+2" joint undergraduate programs with Tomsk Polytechnic University in Russia since 2002. Qualified graduates of the program receive a diploma and graduation certificate from both countries.
