“Study in China: International Students’ Recital and Dubbing Contest” Successfully Held in JLU

On November 30, the flying snowflakes outside were in sharp contrast to the heat inside the room on JLU campus, where “Study in China: International Students’ Recital and Dubbing Contest” was being held successfully. 120 people participated in the contest, including 92 contestants from 28 countries, who study in 13 higher learning institutes in Jilin Province, and their leading teachers and Chinese language teachers.

The contest is an active response to “Study in China Initiative” of the Ministry of Education and one of the series activities of the initiative. It is hosted by Jilin Province Higher Learning Institution Association for International Students Education and Management, co-hosted by College of International Education of JLU, and supported by International Cooperation and Exchange Section of Educational Department of Jilin Provincial Government and School of International Chinese Language Education of JLU. This contest has built a platform for international students in Jilin Province to communicate in Chinese and to demonstrate Chinese culture.

This contest is divided into two groups – Recital and dubbing. In the recital group, the contestants recited with music, individually or in groups, who fully showed the artistic infection of poem recital and their passion for performance. The dubbing contest turned into an audio-visual feast. With either touching voices for movie clips or humorous dubbing for animations, contestants competed with their top imagination and creativity. Their wonderful and lifelike dubbing won continuous applause from the audience.

After a day’s competition, Abdoallah Alhssen Esmail Kebier (Chinese Name: Zheng Kai), a Sudanese contestant from Changchun University of Science and Technology, and Ham Anna (Chinese Name: Xian Anna), a Korean contestant from JLU, won the top awards. Accompanied by melodious music, Zheng Kai recited A Letter to My Mother. He was so affectionate that his recital triggered everyone’s love for his or her mother. Thinking of and missing their mothers, some were moved to tears. Xian Anna recited some works from Selected Xi Murong’s Poems to show a young girl’s innocence and passionate pursuit for love. With amazing collaboration, the contestants dubbed for Zootopia, depicting vividly a slow sloth Flash and a warm-hearted bunny officer Judith, and the audience was immersed in their performance.

60 teams won the first, second and third awards respectively and Zhao Beifeng, Li Meiyan, together with other 12 teachers, won the award of excellent instructors. Chen Mei, director of International Cooperation and Exchange Section of Educational Department of Jilin Provincial Government, presented the awards to the winners of the top awards.  

Certificates of Honor were presented to the award-winning contestants at the end of the contest. Participating teachers and students said that the contest not only built a platform for international students from the higher learning institutions in Jilin Province to show their knowledge of Chinese culture, but also deepened the friendship among them.
