On September 8th, 2017, the four-week summer session for nine students from Kwansei Gakuin University was completed successfully. Lecturers for the workshop from the School of International Chinese Language Education awarded certificates to the students upon their graduation. The ceremony was attended by relevant people from the School of International Chinese Language Education.
The workshop was themed “Chinese Language + Chinese Culture”. Thus, apart from Chinese language courses, lectures featuring traditional Chinese culture were also arranged, such as calligraphy, traditional painting, paper-cutting, erhu and Tai-Chi.
To help the students adapt to their study and life here, the College of International Education chose five Chinese students majoring in Japanese language from the College of Foreign Languages as their partners during the international students’ stay. While at JLU, they talked and had meals with other students majoring in Japanese language, which deepened the mutual understanding between Chinese and Japanese students. Accompanied by their Chinese partners, they visited the campus, Museum of Imperial Palace of Manchu State, Sculpture Apartment, North-East Asian Expo and other cultural and tourist destinations.
The nine students had planned to visit China on August 7th but had to cancel their flight because of typhoon. Their flight was rescheduled to August 11th and was delayed by nearly four hours. It was already over 1 a.m. after check-in. Seven hours later, they headed for Changbai Mountains. So on September 8th when having farewell diner, they said that though they arrived late because of typhoon and flight delay, they felt it worthwhile and were happy that they learnt the Chinese language, experienced Chinese culture and made Chinese friends.
The exchange between JLU and Kwansei Gakuin University began in 1982. The cooperation has been close. Every two years students are sent to JLU to attend workshops for short-term study and exchange. Until now, 15 groups have been sent, totaling 219 students.
