On the afternoon of June 14th, the reading aloud activity of the international students in Jilin University (JLU) took place in the “Jidaren” reading space of Dinxin Library. The activity was attended by relevant personnel in charge from the College of International Education and School of International Chinese Language Education, 17 international students from ten countries and their student tutors and some other interested students.
The reading aloud activity is themed “Cultural Silk Road”. Students from various countries signed up for it with great enthusiasm. After two rounds of preliminary selection, 17 students were finalized as contestants. Every contestant chose materials that matched the theme, including classical poems and essays by Chinese and foreign writers and original works.
SHIMAA IBRAHIM OSMAN IBRAHIM from Sudan read her original writing “Silk Road”, which kicked off the activity against the camel bell background music. Yusupova Aziza from Tajikistan also read her original writing titled “Go for Your Dream”, which told her story of learning Chinese and expressed her love for it and her dream of being a Chinese teacher. TUVSHINTUGS MUNKH-ERDENE from Mongolia and CICIK ARISTA from Indonesia together read Shizhi’s “Believe in the Future”, moving every one present with their uplifting reading that delivered the message of believing in oneself and in the future. HAN JINSOK from North Korea read aloud “Vision for the Silk Road”, which reviewed the glory of the ancient Silk Road and foresaw the bright prospect of the Belt and Road initiative.
Then Chinese students did their reading as performance. Judges then gave their scores for contestants and awarded “Best Reader” to five international students, “Excellent Reader” to five students, “Best Participant” to seven students and “Best Tutors” to tutors of “Best Reader” and “Excellent Reader” winners. Yue Hui, Dean of School of International Chinese Language Education, Li Meihua, Dean of College of International Education, and judges granted certificates and awards to the winners.
The reading aloud activity concluded with a group picture. CICIK ARISTA, the Indonesian student on Confucius Institute Scholarship that won “Best Reader”, said: “I want to thank all my teachers for their encouragement and support. I also want to thank my dear friends. I want to thank Jilin University for hosting such a wonderful event. Every one has done a good job.”
This event was hosted by the College of International Education and School of International Chinese Language Education, and co-hosted by the library and BuddyFamily student club under the College of International Education. It aimed at helping international students improve their Chinese proficiency and deepen their love of Chinese culture and promoting exchanges between Chinese and international students.
