Since College of International Education started preparation in November, 2016, the tutoring courses for international students have drawn attention from both Chinese and international students extensively. Altogether 357 students from 38 colleges and 32 countries took part. Over 200 students applied to be assistants to Chinese writing and basic courses. After examination and appraisal and short-term training, 92 pairs of study groups covering 7 campuses were formed. The tutoring lasted a month.
Chinese writing tutoring could improve international students’ Chinese expression and application abilities. Basic course tutoring mainly aimed at improving their learning capabilities so that they could better proceed with their study. The tutoring not only provided Chinese students with a platform to improve their English communication ability but also contributed to the friendship between Chinese people and foreign people as well as the spread of Chinese culture.
The Chinese students that became teachers said that the international students had positive attitudes and showed keen interest in Chinese culture. Touched by their enthusiasm in learning, the Chinese students felt that their efforts in preparing for the lessons were worthwhile. The international students indicated that this platform could help them make more Chinese friends, better study Chinese and learn about Chinese culture. They hoped that the university could provide more such opportunities of communication.
The tutoring platform that brought together Chinese and foreign students is a brand new attempt by College of International Education. On the basis of this, College of International Education will continue to provide such platforms and create better opportunities for international students to learn the Chinese language and understand Chinese culture.
