The International Food Festival series of activities was proposed by College of International Education. The canteen of Friendship Guesthouse embraced the proposal and added “hometown cuisine” in the Western Food Canteen to ease the nostalgia of international students. Chinese faculty members and students could also learn about exotic food, not only tasting it but also learning how to make it. During each phase a theme is highlighted, that is to say, special food from one country or nation is rolled out. Once its cooks learn how to make these exotic food, the Western Food Canteen will serve it from time to time.
On May 13th, 2017, an atmosphere of warmth reigned in the Friendship Guesthouse of Jilin University. Cooks of the guesthouse canteen, students from India, faculty members of Jilin University and Chinese students with an keen interest were gathered together to see how ingredients became Indian food served on the table.
Cooks of the guesthouse canteen carefully observed the process of cooking, and at the night of the same day they made Indian food with some Chinese flavor. They learned so fast that even the Indian students were impressed. Next day the cooks invited the Indian students to taste the food and they could not stop praising the food. At that moment, language was no longer a barrier against communication. Food brought their hearts closer.
The canteen served Indian food such as curry and potato and Indian pancakes on the noon of Monday, and they were well-received among many International students.
We will launch sharing of Ukrainian, Mongolian and Arabian food successively.
