On the afternoon of September 7th and 8th, the orientation for the international students of Jilin University (JLU) in the 2017 fall semester was held in Friendship Guesthouse. It was attended by over 250 new international students and personnel in charge from relevant departments such as the College of International Education, the School of International Chinese Language Education, Division of Undergraduate Education, Student Mental Health Education Center, Security Office and International Exchange & Service Center under Logistics Group.
The orientation was given in three languages, Chinese, English and Korean, and given twice. First, Li Meihua, Dean of the College of International Education, expressed her warm welcome to the new students in Chinese-English and Chinese Korean). she hoped that they would work hard to acquire professional knowledge, abide by laws and disciplines, make more friends, talk to their parents often and have a great time in JLU. She also introduced the functions and management responsibilities of the College of International Education. Wang Rui, Deputy Head of Division of Undergraduate Education, briefed the students about educational management and rules, majors and disciplines and credits of JLU. Bai Zhongqi from Student Mental Health Education Center introduced practical ways for the students to adjust themselves psychologically and maintain mental health in a new country and new culture. Zhou Zhongping from Security Office gave common-sense information on safety and fire prevention, transportation safety and off-campus accommodation. Li Yaming from International Exchange & Service Center under Logistics Group explained management rules of international students’ apartment. Li Dongmei, Associate Professor from the School of International Chinese Language Education, mainly introduced Chinese teaching management and arrangements to students that would study in her school. Staff of the College of International Education gave a detailed explanation of relevant Chinese laws, regulations and discipline of JLU, extension of residence permit, religious management, medical insurance, book borrowing and material downloading.
Personnel in charge from International Students Association under the College of International Education, introduced past activities and plans for this semester of their own club and welcomed new students to join.
During the orientation, the College of International Education also praised the 2016-class winners of excellent note-taking and demonstrated their notes taken in class to encourage the new students to work hard. Dean Li Meihua, Deputy Dean Xue Lei, Deputy Head Wang Rui and Associate Professor Li Dongmei granted certificates and awards to the winners.
The orientation aims at guiding the new international students from multiple perspectives and helping them to know about the university and fit in as soon as possible. That they got off to this good start boosts confidence that they will complete their study smoothly in JLU.
