In the afternoon of May 14th, 2015, College of International Education carried out the first-phase activity of Foreign Language Salon. International students of Jilin University from such countries as Britain, Canada, the US, Hungary, Yemen and Vietnam and the Chinese students from International Students Association participated and had a happy and fruitful afternoon.
The students showed great enthusiasm and actively engaged themselves in every part. In the “brainstorm” part, the international students led the Chinese students to rack their brains and pool ideas. They creatively and imaginatively simulated a scenario of survival on a deserted island, which honed their logic thinking skills. Then the international students read some tongue twisters accurately and fluently, and helped the Chinese students to read them out loudly and fluently and understand the different meanings of one word. Plus, meaningful short videos with dialogues spoken in a pure accent were played, which aimed at helping the Chinese students to think in English via discussions of the video. At last, international student Ahmed Abdo Farhan Saif explained the frequently used prepositions and helped the other students tell apart words that were often mixed up. This was very beneficial to the listeners.
The Foreign Language Salon is both informative and fun, making itself an effective platform for Chinese and foreign students to make friends with each other. Together, they can play simple and interesting games and impart easily understood and practical knowledge. This approach improves the English listening and speaking of Chinese students and also helps the international students fit in in such a relaxing and harmonious atmosphere.
Besides English, College of International Education will also host salons for other foreign languages and promote exchanges between Chinese and foreign students via diverse activities.
