College of International Education of Jilin University organized over 50 international students sponsored by Chinese Government Scholarship to visit Shanghai and Xi’an in November and December respectively. The purpose is to enrich international students’ extra curricular life, enable them to understand China better and appreciate the charm of traditional Chinese culture so that they could understand and be friendly to China.
In Shanghai, the international students visited Shanghai Mart Building, evidence of China’s rapid development and advancing science and technology; they also went to Shanghai Museum, where they learned about China’s history and culture and were amazed by the cultural profundity of China as a time-honored ancient civilization; they also visited Yuyuan Garden and savored the beauty of Chinese gardens.
In Xi’an, the international students visited the Forest of Stone Steles Museum, whose distinctive inscriptions and epitaphs on stones gave them a taste of the unique charm of Chinese characters. The visit to the Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses and Shaanxi Provincial Museum allowed students to lift the veil of the mysterious ancient China and directly observe Chinese culture in front of their eyes. The students also climbed the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, step by step. Physically, they were tired; psychologically, they were satisfied. The Chinese culture is more than just Chinese, but also global. That culture knows no boundaries is perfectly shown during this trip.
During the Chinese culture experience trip, China’s historical culture and modern development were connected by historical landmarks. Thus the international students had a direct contact with and experience of what they learned about in books. This trip marked the beginning of new journey for international students to experience Chinese culture.
